4 Jun , 2018

Taking care of your motor is an important aspect of ownership. If you fail to do so you may find yourself looking for a new mode of transportation prematurely. Taking care of your car doesn’t involve rocket science and it only takes a small amount of time.

One of the best and most inexpensive ways that you can care for your car is by changing the oil every ten thousand miles or thereabouts. Doing so will help your oil cycle through your engine better and help it run more efficiently. Here are some tips on how to change your oil from home:

Be sure to follow instructions

If you have never changed your own oil before, it can be a bit nerve-wracking. You may find yourself in need of a tutorial or YouTube video to show you the ropes.

The first step to changing your oil is to make sure that you have the equipment needed to do so. Believe it or not, it takes more than just some oil and a funnel to get the old stuff out of your engine.

You will need tools, a drop cloth, funnel, enough oil to replace the old oil, as well as a container to catch the old oil when it empties from the engine. You will also want to consider replacing the oil filter. This will help the oil flow through the engine far better than a clogged filter.

Note your manual’s specifications particularly on the oil and oil filters essentials. As a precaution, remember that substituting the manufacturer’s recommendations of oil and oil filters for your own preference may damage your engine. Furthermore, do not neglect the oil exchange intervals recommended by the manual vis-a-vis the filters.

Investing in the right tools

As we briefly mentioned above, having the proper tools can make or break the task. Some of the necessary equipment that you need include rags, ramps or jacks, safety glasses, a container for draining oil, wrenching accessories, a rubber mallet, among other tools that you may deem necessary.

While jacks are commonly used to lift cars, DIY oil change ramps will always give you a safer and more comfortable ground clearance to seamlessly execute your tasks in a quick manner.

Whether you prefer jacks or the effortless and time-saving ramps, the key objective is always to ensure that you can securely move underneath the heavy vehicle without being injured.

Do not over tighten or over loosen the drain plug or oil filter

As easy as it may seem, fixing the drain plug after draining the oil followed by installing the filter can damage the drain plug, the oil filter or the oil pan. Over loosening these components, on the other hand, can lead to oil leakages or even risk engine failure under severe circumstances. Always be cautious while fixing the various components associated with the oil change process.

Apart from the aforementioned tips, if your engine is cold,  always remember to start and run it for around 5 minutes before draining the oil.

On the contrary, hot engine should be allowed to settle and cool for around 30 minutes to avoid getting burned as you carry out the maintenance process.
